Success Story
How a professor manages check-ins for 120 students in seconds without increasing their workload.
"I wanted to take attendance for my astronomy class of over 100 people. A paper sign-in sheet or calling names one-by-one were not options. So, I decided to give Youhere a try."
In my class, I usually start out by writing the topic schedule on the board. Now, at the very top, I also write "Check-in please." While students file into their seats, it's the perfect time for them to handle this quick task.
I set a map-based check-in pin right over my building with a 15-minute window. When I call class to order, I orally ask them to "check-in please." Many have already done it. Students often joke about the phone's location precision: "Ooo... I was only 2.4 meters away!"
How long does it take? I really don't know, because when I'm ready to start class, the check-ins are already done. Everyone does it at once, which makes "how long it takes" hard to assess—it's essentially instantaneous for me.
I always bring a paper backup for students with dead batteries or forgotten phones. They just jot their name down as they leave, and I manually check them in later. Access to their own records means they can always verify their own status.
"Attendance is one of those boring tasks, but Youhere handles it just fine for me. It really hasn't increased my workload at all."
